T's 1st Tri of the Season

The boys and I headed to Greensboro for the day for Thompson to participate in his first triathlon of 2013.  Having completed his first triathlon last fall, he caught the "tri-bug" and has been looking forward to participating in more youth triathlons this year.  In preparation for race season, he's been swimming twice a week in our gym's "swim team"...and my how his swimming has improved!
Greensboro's Youth 7.03 Series kicked off this afternoon.  In the 7-8 year old male division, he had to swim 50-yard, bike 1.5 miles and run 0.62 miles...and placed 2nd with a total time of 14:44.  (winning time was 14:43)  Out of the nine 7-8 year old boys, Thompson was 6th out of the pool.  Not surprisingly (like last fall), he rocked his swim-bike transition picking up several positions.  By the time he was returning from the bike, he was in solid second and took first around the last curve.  According to Thompson, he and the first place winner traded positions several times during the run, and as you can see from the pictures, it was a close finish.

In the end, T had fun, which is what is is all about!  This race also served as a great "warm-up" in preparation for the Asheville area's Carolina Multisport Series, which kicks off in May with a race each month through August.

T's 1st Chess Tourney

This school year marks the first time Thompson has participated in the school's Chess Club, which convenes each Friday.  And today, he participated in his first local chess tournament...and placed 2nd!  (There were 19 kids in the K-1 division in which he played.)  His first game was a draw, earning him 0.5 point.  He won his next three games, each earning 1.0 point, and finished with 3.5 points.  What an accomplishment!
